Under An Awning

under an awning
we hide from the rain
came down with no warning
soaked you again
you tell me I'm perfect
a genius for sure
so I owe it to you
to fix you once more

you tell me to say something wise to keep you entertained
but I am not your puppy to be so easily trained
you tell me I'm the only one who really understands
but let me off this pedestal & let go of my hand

under an awning
my back to the wall
your ice cream sits melting
your voice is so small
I'm your inspiration
you call me your muse
though you never gave me
the chance to refuse

you tell me I can never know the pain that you've been through
the trouble of it is that this is probably the truth
you come to me with poetry you beg me to anoint
so better that you learn now that I'll always disappoint

(guitar solo)

under an awning
we hide from the rain
came down with no warning
soaked you again
you beg me to hold you
you beg me to stay
but out from this awning
I'm walking away

Being on a pedestal really, really sucks.
